Once children are comfortable with writing algebraic expressions, demonstrate how to evaluate such expressions. ![]() ![]() (8 multiplied by y) Evaluating Algebraic Expressions In lack of commas, you can even break down a word expression to explain this more visually, for example: In other words, we can translate the identified operations into 6 x z + 8 x y or 6z + 8y.Įncourage children to be attentive to commas in verbal expressions, as this will help them group the terms properly. Explain that in this case, there is one addition (‘sum of’) and then two multiplications (‘multiplied by’). You may even encourage them to use a highlighter. You can start by encouraging students to first identify the phrases indicating operations. The sum of 6 multiplied by z and 8 multiplied by y For instance, explain how you’d write an algebraic expression for the following word expression: Then, you can provide some practical examples. For example, you can draw a chart in different colors for each operation and the phrases associated with it. Multiplication: times, multiplied by, product…įor an overview of more common phrases in word problems, you could try using some visually stimulating materials. Subtraction: less than, decreased by, taken from, minus… First, highlight some common phrases to which students should be attentive. Writing Algebraic ExpressionsĪfter you’ve defined what writing algebraic expressions means, it’s time to move on to the actual process of writing algebraic expressions out of word problems. This includes math problems on recognizing whether an expression is an algebraic expression, recognizing what a variable is, practicing the order of operations, differentiating between algebraic expressions and numerical expressions, etc. You can create a simple bell-work activity that contains several math problems to help children go through concepts that writing and evaluating algebraic expressions builds on. Start with a brief preparatory activity to review previously learned concepts with children. How to Teach Evaluating and Writing Algebraic Expressions Bell-Work Activity The process of translating written words into algebraic expressions is called writing algebraic expressions, whereas the process of substituting a number for each variable and doing the operation is called evaluating algebraic expressions. Explain that when algebra problems come as word problems, we must translate these words into algebraic expressions. Then point out that algebraic expressions are not always provided in a straightforward way as the above example, but may come in the form of word problems. Provide an example, such as 5x-2 is an algebraic expression, as it contains two constants (the number 5 and 2 which don’t change), a variable (the letter x, which can change), and an operation (subtraction). Most likely, some of them will reply that an algebraic expression is a mathematical expression that consists of constants, variables, and operations (such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc.). What Is Writing and Evaluating Algebraic Expressions?įor starters, ask children whether they remember the definition of an algebraic expression. Teachers and homeschooling parents can support their students in solving such algebra problems in various ways, which we’ll look at in the following article. This is referred to as evaluating and writing algebraic expressions. To solve such word problems, kids must first create algebraic expressions out of word problems. Some are simple and concise, whereas others are complex and may even resemble a short story. When learning algebra in school, children come across many word problems. 11/4/2023 0 Comments Menopause moods and emotions![]() More recently, a questionnaire, Meno-D, developed by Kulkarni et al. Validated tools exist to assess the severity of depressive symptoms (eg Patient Health Questionnaire-9) and menopause related quality of life questionnaires (eg Greene Climacteric Scale). ![]() However, a unique presentation at the menopause has not been shown in research, which is likely contributed to by a lack of menopause-specific screening tools to assess mood disturbance. Many symptoms overlap difficulties with sleep, concentration, energy and libido could be attributed to classic depressive symptoms or, equally, to mood disturbance related to the menopausal transition.įurthermore, it has been reported that women describe an “on-off” phenomenon with sadness or irritability which may last for minutes to hours and spontaneously resolve, similar to what can be seen with PMS (5), making it harder to establish a temporal association between the psychological and physical symptoms. The clinical presentation of depression/mood disturbance at the menopause transition may be unique, with less sadness, increased anger, irritability and paranoia which can fluctuate in severity compared to younger women. Risk factors for depressive symptoms/disorders are multiple and include VMS, previous mood disorders including prior MDD, reproductive related mood disturbance (severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or postpartum depression), other health factors, psychological and socioeconomic factors, and hormonal changes such as variability in FSH and oestradiol. Premature ovarian insufficiency is associated with a 20% higher prevalence of depression than the general population (4). Women with hysterectomy and ovarian preservation have a 20% higher risk and women with hysterectomy without ovarian conservation have a 44% higher risk of depression (3). The risk of a major depressive episode (MDE) is also higher in the peri-menopause compared to the pre-menopause in women with a history of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) (2). Even women with no previous history of depression, particularly those with history of vasomotor symptoms (VMS) or adverse life events are at increased risk of depressive symptoms compared to premenopausal women (2). ![]() The menopausal transition is a time of increased risk of mood disturbance. Creatureīirds of all kinds eat insects as a major part of their diet and therefore will eat mosquitoes just as they will eat any insect. Summary Table: Which Creatures Eat Mosquitoes? They can’t eat the adults, of course, but they love to eat the larva and pupae. Chief among these are goldfish, guppies, minnows, and koi, which can be kept over winter. Certain species of fish will eat mosquito larva whenever they get the chance. Like wasps, they might accidentally kill a male mosquito from time to time in a territorial dispute over flowers and access to pollen, but that’s it. Bees are not a natural enemy of mosquitoes or one of their predators. However, ducks will eat any insect so the odds of them eating enough mosquitoes to keep them under control are about zero. As a water fowl though, they are also notable for eating mosquito larva and pupae that are in the water. Like all birds, ducks will eat mosquitoes along with other insects. They are ambush predators, lying in wait for their prey to come to them rather than hunting for it, so any mosquitoes they eat are random rather than deliberate. Praying mantises eat mosquitoes and just about anything else they can get their claws on, even small hummingbirds. They can eat up to 60 insects per hour so they play a definite role in keeping the mosquito population in check. Barn swallows are especially fond of eating mosquitoes, gnats, and flying termite swarmers. The only thing they feed on is nectar, tree sap, rotting fruit, and muddy puddles. They have a widely varying diet will opportunistically eat the odd mosquito here and there, but not enough to have any impact on their population. Ladybugs eat garden pests, so they might consume the occasional male mosquito who only feeds on nectar, but as a general rule they do not eat mosquitoes. Regardless, they are considered to be beneficial insects, unless you are dealing with a ladybug infestation. Ladybugs are carnivores but they avoid eating bloodsucking insects such as mosquitoes and bed bugs. Chickens eat mosquitoes and other small insects but they can’t possibly eat enough of them fast enough to reduce their population. As a general rule though, Venus fly traps are not know for eating mosquitoes. They lure insects with their nectar, so they will occasionally lure a male mosquito into their trap, but the bloodsucking female is looking for people or animals to feed on so she can lay more eggs. Although they may occasionally kill and eat a mosquito it is more by accident than anything. They eat nectar, fruits of various kinds, honey, some small insects, and a few plants. Wasps are not generally known for eating mosquitoes. Instead they eat from flowers just like many other pollinator species. Love bugs aren’t native to the United States and they don’t eat mosquitoes. They don’t search for mosquito larva in particular though. If the larva they attack happen to be mosquito larva, the mayflies aren’t picky. However, they will eat algae or the larva of any species that lives in the water. They eat them as “targets of opportunity” just as they do with any other insect. However, they don’t eat mosquitoes exclusively. ![]() ![]() Insects are a mainstay in the diets of most species of birds, so naturally they wind up eating mosquitoes as well. Most major bird species will eat mosquitoes. At best, these amphibian hunters can only keep the mosquito population in balance. Frogs and toads eat mosquitoes, but it isn’t enough to stop the growth of their population, popular misconceptions to the contrary notwithstanding. They also need protein, which they get from eating mosquitoes, gnats, aphids, flying ants, white flies, and more. Hummingbirds primarily eat flower nectar, visiting up to 1000 flowers a day. Once their prey is caught in their web, a spider will wrap it in spider silk and save the body until it is hungry. Spiders will spin a web that catches a multitude of flying insects, including mosquitoes. Mosquito hawks are another name for crane flies, who aren’t even able to eat during their adulthood. Their larva might eat mosquito larva in the water, but that’s about it. ![]() Their whole life span is only about 10-15 days from hatching to death and only during a few of those days are they adults. Crane flies, which look like over-sized mosquitoes, don’t actually eat at all during their short life as an adult.

The Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, third edition (OTPF-III American Occupational Therapy Association, 2014), and the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Engagement (CMOP-E Townsend and Polatajko, 2013) are examples that highlighted that cognitive abilities can have powerful effects on one’s daily occupational performance and participation, in addition to physical skills, environments, occupations or daily activities and other relevant factors. This close relationship between one’s cognition and performance and participation in daily activities is also exhibited in a number of practice models and frameworks of occupational therapy, which provide a systematic and comprehensive way to conceptualize and guide occupational therapy practice. It is directly related to one’s ability to engage in activities of daily life and participate in purposeful, proactive interactions and complex decision making ( Radomski and Morrison, 2014).
